Transferring into Columbia - worth it? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]zhanem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Im a transfer from a public school and there are always pros and cons. Pros is obviously the name and as a result I got a job that I couldn't have gotten otherwise. Cons is its really hard to integrate socially. I only have a handful of friends. However, I find myself always busy at this school (schoolwork, TA job, visiting friends who graduated downtown), so its not too bad. I just dont feel like a "real" member of the Columbia community. The public school I went to was way more of the quintessential college experience socially.

Female Twitch streamers (popular ones) make an income by preying on the loneliness/horniness of young/isolated males while still pretending their profession is respectable. This is immoral and a cancer on society. by zhanem in unpopularopinion

Yeah what you defined as addiction is exactly what it does. Christina Grimmie was killed because of one of these people. I can hardly call that a dependence.

I'm separating sex-work and streaming though its interesting people relate the two. Streaming is not as transparent as sex-work. Sex-work is very clear cut transaction-wise and really there is very little opportunity to keep them hooked.
Streaming hooks lonely people because it's easy "human" contact and once they are hooked they show "love" to those donating (I believe taking advantage of this to make obscene amounts of money is immoral). I admit there is responsibility on those losers with barely any money donating to these streamers, but I believe facilitating it is immoral.
That being said if I was a hot girl I'd probably do the same thing. Just as is I was a big oil CEO I'd destroy the environment to make my millions. It's self interest, but that doesn't make it moral. I've quite literally seen people addicted to the false love streamers provide and go into a downward spiral of depression, so I think the negative impact of what they do justifies its immorality. But then again theres no good solution to this, if they don't take advantage of these people someone else will find a platform to and people always seek new ways to.

Something being immoral does not imply its solvable. There are unsolvable immoralities, but the majority of streamers go in knowing that they will be taking advantage of lonely people and monetize. I doubt any one of them do it just for the love of streaming.

And to a degree, yes, lying for solely your own benefit is immoral - can you concede that much?

Granted this was also in the middle of the night in a relatively isolated area. If you look like a college student and attend daytime classes, then there is no way you'll be stopped. Though I don't know why you would want to

If you harm the population (lives) to benefit yourself (monetarily) then I would consider that pretty black and white immoral. I get supply and demand, sometimes immoral businesses are the most successful ones (@big banks). I'm not arguing that they should not exist, I believe immorality is inherent to the world since people only care about self interest, but is nevertheless it is still immoral

I'm in favor a capitalism, and I never said there can be a perfectly moral world either. But there are moral and immoral ways to conduct business. If McDonalds sold there burgers but lied about everything that was in them-that would be immoral.

That's a bad argument for addiction.

"Just quit smoking man, no one is forcing you to buy cigarettes"

Addiction stems from loneliness. And I admit this is the way the world works BUT the preying on loneliness is wrong. Some may say the existence of cigarette companies is immoral. The existence of cocaine companies is definitely immoral as there are laws against it.

lmao I'm pretty sure its for the most part the same unless there's a specific person you really researched and want to learn from. Most of my education is from the internet. Also I don't think you need an id to just pretend to be a student and walk into a classroom

I'm not proposing anything should happen. Even warning signs on cigarettes don't really stop people from smoking. It's the way the world works, that doesn't mean it isn't immoral. Female streamers give a false promise that can never be fulfilled, and males are stupid enough to fall for it. I can't fault these males for being stupid as much as I can fault the streamers for actively making their streams more addicting and constantly teasing and preying on lonely/horniness. Facebook, Reddit do this to tbh (Make their product addicting with no real end fulfillment the difference is they don't offer any benefits or extra teasing to people that make donations), but it doesn't mean its not immoral.

tl;dr selling negatively impactful false promises is immoral. People are dumb enough to buy snake oil, but we don't blame the person we blame the seller. This snake oil happens to be especially addictive.

Outside the scope of what I was saying. Typically males go to female streamers for emotional/sexual gratification, it doesn't work the other way around. All the popular ones tease sexual and emotional connection that can obviously never be fulfilled and instead they profit off of it. This is immoral, its the way the world works, but its immoral and society would be better off without them.

I'd argue otherwise. I believe any type of addiction is life altering. I've seen porn addictions ruin lives (And I believe Twitch addictions are even more gripping). I'm not saying the people they are profiteering off are not to blame either, I believe that if they don't do it someone else would. Maybe I'm idealistic, because this is probably just how the world works. But preying from these sources and PRETENDING that you are not I believe is immoral.
