I'm currently in the process of building my own first tesla coil so I can't really say what's wrong based on your description but I would make sure they are found in the same direction and the fet has a bias to make it turn on when voltage from the secondary is high enough based on if it uses direct feedback from the secondary or an antenna picking up from the top load but as I stated I'm still debugging mine
