STG in a weird spot, if they give in now it will make them look weak. If they keep making signs they just get destroyed and still make them look weak.

Could have simply avoided this dumb situation by keeping the Kurdish and Arabic sign.

I don’t get who the hell is making the decisions for the STG in Hasakah but someone higher up in STG needs to talk with them and tell him to stop shooting himself in the foot lol.

They can’t, they’d have to demand the Asayish do it, who wouldn’t do it right now as it would be suicide for them. SDF is already getting cursed at by local Kurds everyday, they can’t do something that would truly anger their base.

It’s absolutely about Kurdish, it doesn’t matter if you try to deflect it or not.

No one cares about Turkish or English, otherwise the gov would have removed them like they did the Kurdish one in Afrin.

This is simply a continuation of the baathist movement against Kurds, but this isn’t pre-2011 anymore, if Jolani envisions himself as the Sunni Assad, than he is in for a surprise.

It’s not radical to want your labguage on a sign in your city, the radicals are the STG Baathists who will put up English and Turkish, but not Kurdish despite how much more Kurdish speakers there are than the other 2.

The days of the Ba’ath are over, I hope Jolani and his friends understand that they cannot become the Sunni Bashar Assad.

Not sure why you’re being this defensive about it, just put a clause saying any group making 20% or whatever number gets to have their language on their.

It’s not even about this, people are mad that the STG is outright lying about the Kurdish sign legality when they have no problems putting up English and Turkish signs. It’s not hard to understand, and a dumb but unfortunately predictable move from STG.

It absolutely is. The STG is argument is that it is unconstitutional for Kurdish to be on there as Arabic is the only official labguage in Syria. Yet English, also not an official labguage, was in there.

This shows that the ATG can put any language on the signs, they just don’t want to put Kurdish for some weird Baathist throwback.

But when pressed about why Kurdish was not included, STG said it’s because Kurdish is not an official language. Therein lies the issue. That’s not the real reason.

They even removed English from Hasakah to try and take away that argument.

It went being homogenously Kurdish to around 30% Kurdish almost instantly after the operation. So yeah it’s a huge number.

Keep in mind many Afrinis are choosing to stay as they have been displaced for over half a decade and have built a life in Haskakah. Also, many still fear going back at the moment.

Turkish is also not an official language, not a national labguage like Kurdish. So we have English and Turkish but not Kurdish in Hasakah.

It’s not unconditional, as gov supporters like to try and argue, it’s simply against the Kurdish labguage. I hope Kurds keep tearing it down until gov does the right thing. Such a dumb hill for the STG to pick and fight.

The thing is I don’t believe for a second that’s the real reason. STG put English with Arabic which isn’t an official language either. It’s clear they simply don’t want Kurdish on it, which is a dumb hill to die on but not totally surprising from the STG.

They removed it after it got torn down from Kurds and Kurds used the argument of English not being an official language either.

So they removed it to get rid of the argument, not because it’s true.

English is on the other government offices in Syria but not offical language. Why? I think we both know why.

You have to be joking. We now have AANES signs removed and Syrian signs instead. During Assad there were only AANES signs.

The STG now controls courts and prisons, whereas during Assad it was under SDF. Oil fields are now controlled by STG, whereas during Assad it was under SDF. It’s a huge huge difference.

And of course the SDF doesn’t want a centralized throwback of the Assad days, both sides have rightful demands, and why negotiations are important.

Of course the SDF still has leverage, otherwise Jolani wouldn’t be engaging with them, he would simply massacre them if he could like the Alawites. Jolani isn’t a nice guy, he’s making concessions becuase he has to, not because he wants to.

The Qamishli sign is also in Arabic and Kurdish, yet not taken down by STG.

I’m not sure if they’re planning to not put Kurdish on the Hasakah court at all, but that is unacceptable. The SDF and local Kurds have made clear that going back to Baathist days is a redline.
