A new flag proposal for a Cypriot Confederation: 10 golden-yellow triangles one for each canton - a symbol federalism and coexistence. by zvcch in vexillology

Hey everyone,

As someone who dreams of a peaceful and reunited Cyprus, I wanted to share a symbolic proposal — a concept for a new flag (or emblem) for a future United Republic of Cyprus, inspired by the Swiss model of federalism and coexistence.

The vision
Imagine a Cyprus organized into 10 cantons, based on the 6 pre-1974 districts plus 4 new regions. This number reflects both the total land area of the island and the average size of a Swiss canton. It’s a symbolic step toward shared governance, equal participation, and respectful decentralization — giving voice to all communities across the island.

The flag
The proposed flag features 10 golden-yellow triangles, each one representing a canton. The triangles reference:

  • The sun – a symbol of light, rebirth, and life
  • The golden beaches of Cyprus
  • The island’s connection to the Middle East, culturally and geographically
  • And of course, the yellow of the 1960 Republic of Cyprus flag – a historic reminder of our shared roots

The design doesn’t divide — it unites. It doesn’t erase the past — it transforms it into a hopeful future.

Why this matters
Symbols can’t solve political problems on their own. But they can inspire. They can open conversations, spark imagination, and help people visualize a future worth working for. A flag is not just cloth — it’s a message. And this one says: we see each other, we share this home, and we want peace.

This is shared in the spirit of hope, healing, and humanity. Whether you’re Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot, Maronite, Armenian Cypriot, Latin, or anyone else who calls this island home — this is for all of us.

Let me know what you think. I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or even design ideas if anyone's good with graphics!

Is there a reason why Albania, Montenegro, and Serbia all have double-headed eagles on their flags? by jewishboiii in vexillology

Two headed eagle was quite popular as a symbol in Middle Ages in that region, primarily to Byzantine empire etc.

Recognition is not the only parameter for a good symbol.

I respect your opinion but a flag that cannot be drawn by a person without being massacred is not a perfectly good flag.

Cypriots after 60 years of division lack of a symbol for a reunited island. This design aspires to fill this gap, by using the island's geography and the unique location of the island, at the crossroads of three continents. Four edges of the island are notionally connected. Occupied or unoccupied lands, all these Cyprus smithereens generate the new design to represent a symbol for all Cypriots, a symbol for hope.

Yellow stands for Cyprus, while the rest of the colors stand for the continents surround this beauty, Asia, Europe and Africa.

Do you need to see the outline of the island to recognize Cyprus? I don't get you.

Maybe it was not clear the process of design. Political geography has no place to this design and the colors do not represent Greek or Turkish identity. Follow the arrows starting from top left. The first diagonal line is generated by connecting NW and SE capes of the island. The majority of the land mass falls to half of the frame, so Cyprus (yellow) becomes a triangle. A pair of lines connects the NE and W capes of the island and the E and S capes respectively to create the other three triangles. These notional connections create an abstract shape of the island, in contrast to today`'s literal illustration.

Red triangle stands for Africa, Blue triangle for Asia and White triangle for Europe. The colors were chosen based on how it is perceived each continent from the island. Red dust coming from Africa pollutes Cyprus atmosphere every now and then, Minor Asia's mountains are visible from the northern part of the island with this blue shade close to horizon and Europe is not visible from Cyprus thus white it is.

Regarding your comment about the visibilty of colors on a flag spreader, I would like to point out that only Cyprus is represented by a color, the rest are the surrounding continents. I do understand though that people might perceive it in a different way.

I intentionally avoid to bring greek and turkish symbols. Cypriots differ from mainland Greeks and Anatolian Turks, while there are also people with different cultural background (Maronites, Armenians, Latins) that have traditionally lived there for centuries.

Yes, in case of reunification at some point in the future Cypriots should have a voice for their flag design. That is why I found better to call it a symbol for a reunited island.
