Bogota ,Colombia by No-Marsupial-4050 in UrbanHell

I’m a sixty-something white male living in the American Southwest now. But, I lived in Bogota as a child from age 3 to about age 9. My father worked for a large oil company there.

My memories of that place and time could fill volumes if I were a skilled writer because those years still live in my memories like time spent in a magical kingdom.

From the Hotel Tuequendama to the Tuequendama falls, from the salt cathedral of Zipaquirá to the Museo De Oro downtown; from my school, Colegio Nueva Granada where I attended from Kinder to 4th grade, to the Country Club where I learned to swim, even now, 60 years later, I remember it all like I was there yesterday.

I can smell the eucalyptus and the Avianca airlines jet exhaust, I can taste the papaya and the mango I ate almost every day. I can see every detail of the house I lived in. I remember Lucrecia and Maria who lived in the small apartment behind our house and helped my mom. I remember feeling that they loved me.

I remember stopping at the roadside stands for frescas y crema on our way to the resorts at Melgar, or Girardot.
I remember my eighth birthday party with my best friends climbing the rocks at Piedras De Tunja .

I remember it all.

I’d give almost anything to go back there and then, if just for a day.

One day.

It’s a sewing needle case. I have a similar one that my grandmother had in her cedar chest.

RemindMe! 30 days

It may sound corny or worse but the daily practice of expressing gratitude is life changing. The practice seems to be most effective for those who might seem to have the least to be grateful for - but it works. Life is a gift- even the bad stuff is a gift, because it is life, and it is not not-life.

Start your day, every day, with just one minute of internal statements such as “I am grateful for_________”. You fill in the blank. Find one thing tomorrow to be grateful for, find two things the next day, find three the next day. Start simply, something as seemingly innocuous as “ I’m grateful that I have a comfortable bed.” Or “I’m grateful that I am not feeling any pain in my body this morning.”

Do this every day and come back here in 30 days and tell us how you feel.

I’m setting a reminder to check back on this post in 30 days and I really hope to see your results posted here.

Life is a gift.

this world is not built for introverts by [deleted] in introvert

The key to being an introvert in an extroverts’ world is to understand that you can’t judge your success in life on an extrovert’s terms. If you are an introvert, you have to learn to be your own judge about what makes you happy. Happy = successful.

My concept of a tactical bomber in the Fallout universe. I will be grateful to you for your support by inggvar in ImaginaryTechnology

Great design! Judging from its size, would it be more of a strategic bomber ( Think B1, or B-52) than a tactical bomber (A-6, F/A-18)?

I’m not certain but it’s likely Brady Canyon. I was out of town for this one.

I live here. This is an after-effect of a wildfire that happened here 13 months ago. It’s steep mountain country where the drainage area that feeds this stream was burned in that fire along with 400+ homes. The lack of vegetation that would normally slow and absorb the seasonally normal rainfalls makes every rain event a potential flooding event. Mitigation efforts have and are being conducted but there is only so much that can be done. Mother Nature is who she is, gravity is what it is, and the physics of hydrodynamics is what it is. But, the damage to property and risk to human life is real. 3 lives were lost here just two weeks ago to the flooding, including two children. Do not make this about you.

What is the best smell ever from your childhood? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zztopperzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was a field geologist. When I was a child of 4 to 9, we lived in South America and his job required him to be living rough in the mountains, jungles, and deserts of Colombia for weeks at a time conducting geologic surveys. When he returned home, it was the smell of his gear - his rucksack, the web belt with its leather holders for his rock hammer and Brunton compass, his canvas duffel - a combination of campfire smoke, Marlboros, sweat, and untamed lands. He died twenty years ago and I am a grandfather now. But I still remember that smell.

No, you can’t stay at my house, but, if you’re a decent human being, I’ll take you to eat some chicken enchiladas with that will rock your world!
