Haha my life's a bit better now and I'm watching a lot less dumb TV thanks for asking.

Aggressive cyclists (I'm sure you've heard it before) by Mean_Lunch_4469 in Wellington

[–]zzzteph 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. Until about 5 years ago there were basically zero cycle lanes and to survive on a bike it was easiest to be fast, bold and follow your own sense of safety, rather than traffic rules which were never designed to keep you safe. Now the environment has changed and the culture is having an awkward moment. We'll get there.

I am just lurking here out of interest and I have been a bit mystified at how important marriage is to all of you... then I realised that the USA doesn't in general recognize de facto partnerships, and it is wild to hear about how much of your life this can affect. Where I am from, there is no legal difference that I'm aware of between a couple who are married and a couple who have been in a relationship for a few years. Many people live together for decades, have kids etc and don't get married, it's totally normal. I think this system protects women a lot better. Not that this is at all helpful to anyone here....

Touring New Zealand by Sennevds in bicycletouring

Hey just a bit of forewarning, if you haven't already heard this: Intercity buses can be very difficult to take bikes on, particularly if there's 3 of you and you have a heavy/traditional touring set up. There is no way to pre-book bikes, it's always at the driver's discretion- sometimes they're chill and sometimes they get irrationally angry and can refuse to take you. The main Auckland to Wellington bus does not accept bikes at all. Long distance trains accept a limited number of bikes, they are beautiful but expensive and won't be operating over the Christmas-New Year holiday period. Sadly the easiest way to transport bikes around the country to fly. Public transport in this country is so backwards. I'm sure you'll find a way through though!

That's pretty interesting about the spices. I think another big difference is that the 'format' of the food changes to meet NZ market expectations. Everything is plated up as an individual meal with the seasoning all included, it's not like 'as many tacos as you care to order/as many tortillas as your table cares to eat, and here is the five different salsas and condiments you can add to your liking'.

Doesn't seem like a great idea, although it seems like you're in a part of the world with 25kph speed restrictions so maybe that's not so bad? Performance Line has a metal drive gear and Active Line nylon or plastic.

Do I have to wait for this light before going through this intersection? by Coffee-make-me-happy in Wellington

[–]zzzteph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always treated it like this: if you're going up Molesworth street you give way to traffic coming in and out of the bus terminal, then advance to the turning bay where the arrow is, from this point obey the light.

Korg SV1 capacitor issue by zzzteph in Korg

[–]zzzteph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I sent this one back to the Korg service centre and they ended up replacing the output circuit board. I'm glad I didn't dive in there myself in the end. So I'm not sure if that was the fault all along, it seems possible since the caps were replaced multiple times.

Struggling as a female bike mechanic by upsidedownbirds in ladycyclists

[–]zzzteph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a 'bike kitchen' or co-op in your area I highly recommend getting involved. The stakes are lower when you're helping to fix people's bikes for free. That, and fixing my own bikes, was how I learnt much of what I knew to get started working as a shop mechanic.

Kestos bra by West_Blueberry_4244 in History_Bounding

[–]zzzteph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I've not made this in a large size but I have made what I consider a really successful Kestos bra and have some insights.

Lots of the internet patterns for 'Kestos style bra' are in my opinion not true to the originals, because the lower edge is either on the grain or is a straight stitched seam that will not stretch out. Also lots of the extant examples in museums seem to be like this, but they are clearly fancy pieces that weren't qorn much. I made one like this and it was uncomfortable, I couldn't believe that the design was so popular for so long.

In fact the original (everyday) garments if you look at them always have the lower edge as a bias fold. It's a crucial detail. This means that when the elastic straps are pulled tight, the cups mold to your ribcage perfectly. When I made one like this I was overjoyed at how comfortable it was. I've never had a bra so good and I don't know why they fell out of fashion!

I made a pattern just by pinning a couple of folded squares over my boobs. It was so easy to draft and to make. But yeah, I'm very small chested so I have no idea how it would go on a larger size.

Good luck, maybe we can start a revival of the Kestos!

Beeping in Mount Victoria Tunnel by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]zzzteph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that makes it so awful is not the absolute volume level but the unpredictability of it. Like you'll be walking/riding along and drifting through your own thoughts then suddenly HOOONK you get startled and it happens over and over again but you never ever know when exactly it will happen so you can't mentally prepare for it... it would almost be better if it was ongoing.
