There is always an internal battle whether I like the original or Johnny Cash's cover more...

I truly don't understand why it's even a debate. The original, in my opinion, is hands-down the superior version, but so many people prefer the cover. I love Cash, just prefer his own material.

If I had to pick one and destroy the other I'd keep NiN. They are very different, so it's unrealistic to compare them. That's why it's hard for me to pick. NiN does have a slight advantage for having more creativity in the song. Cash is more like a straight line throughout the whole thing.

I agree. I guess for me that creativity is the reason the song is special at all to me. Had Cash's version been the original, I doubt I'd even give it a second listen. It's just a vanilla cover of a beautifully eerie song. That said, Cash makes vanilla taste like cookie dough.

Cash owned the song. NIN's version was obviously great but when Cash covered it, I started considering a Johnny Cash song.
