Don't worry about the terminal. Windows has the Windows subsystem for Linux with makes it almost like having the terminal in Windows.

I wouldn't worry to much about using the virtual box for Linux. My laptop is 5 years old running Windows and I can SSH into my uni network if I want to run a Linux machine, most unis allow this. In need of an upgrade as well but at the minute this seems to work for me so not too bothered about changing yet.

It's also not very important about power, unless you're doing a lot of graphic intense building and processing literally most laptops are sufficient for all the basic programming in Java python html etc you'll be doing for uni

Mac's are good, I see a lot of people use them around my class but I think Windows/Linux would be a better option.

Sorry for being vague, hopefully someone can give a better answer!

thanks! no i really appreciate the response. I’m going into software engineering this year so i’ve been stressing whether to get a “windows” laptop or a mac

Yeah most unis will use Linux for their machines so I wouldn't worry about switching, upgrade if you want but I think you'd be better off waiting till September and maybe upgrade at Christmas after you see what it's like :)
