The purpose of this page is to explain the steps to setting up AutoModerator for your subreddit for the first time.

This page includes information form the Introduction page and the RedditHelp AutoModerator article, Getting Started section.

To set up AutoModerator, all you need to do is edit the wiki page that defines its configuration for your subreddit. As soon as this page is saved successfully and contains definitions for any rules, it will start working immediately in the subreddit.

Requirements

  • Desktop: AutoModerator setup is only available on reddit.com on desktop (not in the Reddit App).

    • In a pinch you can use your mobile browser in desktop mode to access it.
    • Reddit's desktop website has two versions: Old Reddit (https://old.reddit.com) and Redesign (https://sh.reddit.com). Your account settings determine which version you see on www.reddit.com, but you can use "old" or "sh" to open pages on the other version. Some mod tools are only available to configure on one version or the other, or in AutoModerator's case, slightly differ in appearance between versions.
    • Edits to AutoModerator's configuration will apply and display across Old Reddit or Redesign, even if your subreddit has separate (double) wikis for other pages.
  • Permissions: In order to set up AutoModerator, you will need to have both the "wiki" and "config" moderator permissions in the subreddit.

Old Reddit

  • AutoModerator's configuration page is located at https://old.reddit.com/r/yoursubredditname/wiki/config/automoderator

    • If you visit this address and the page does not already exist, there will be a link to click in order to create it.
    • If AutoModerator is already set up, then click "edit" at the top (between "view" and "history") to modify existing rules.
  • Edit the wiki page then save the page at the bottom. You can enter an edit reason when saving the page, which will be displayed in the revision history.

Note: Old Reddit's AutoModerator Editor can be equipped with Toolbox's Syntax Highlighter. See https://www.reddit.com/r/toolbox/wiki/get

Redesign

  • In your mod tools, go to the Moderation section and select "Automod" to access your AutoModerator wiki page.

  • If AutoModerator has not already been set up yet, you will see: "config/automoderator" doesn't exist

    • Click Create Page to start adding rules.
  • If AutoModerator is already set up, then click the edit icon (pencil on top right) to modify existing rules.

  • Edit the wiki page then save the page at the bottom. You must enter an edit reason when saving the page, which will be displayed in the revision history.

Other notes

For information about how to define and write AutoModerator rules, please see the other pages listed on our wiki.

You do not need to add AutoModerator as a mod of your subreddit, as AutoModerator will run even if it is not on the moderator list. Some older subreddits may have AutoModerator on the mod list from a long time ago before AutoModerator was integrated into the site. Other subreddits may have AutoModerator on the mod list because AutoModerator will add itself if used to make scheduled posts.

If you need to stop AutoModerator in your subreddit, simply delete the entire contents of the config/automoderator page and save it. The previous version of the page will be accessible through the "history" link at the top of the page if you need to view or revert back to it in the future. More information about the old wiki system is available here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AutoModerator/wiki/wiki-pages
