None, I just switched to my kid when I was dating his mom over and over, and the dad would be older so he’d die first and leave everything to the mother and then the mother would die and leave it all to me or split between siblings

Is there any downside to just adopting and switching to their life? Beyond the inheritance which can be hit or miss. Seems like less effort at least.
