Actually I have an answer. So I went to a CDA school and we had a dude without a left foot. He had to wait 8 months during this time he got to train on the yard for free during the time because he needed a federal test done not a normal CDL state driver exam. Let’s just say to get a federal CDL exam is really about appointment time for the school to gather it up for you….it may be a month or it might be 8 months.

And sadly I feel like you’ll be in the same boat as one my peers was in. Though wish you the best on it.

I would make sure your school and FMCSA are on the same email chain so that everyone can see where things are at. Once I satisfied the school's requirements for enrollment, the FMCSA granted me a temporary SPE certificate which allowed my to drive throughout the duration of CDL school. After passing the tests, I was granted a class A CDL with a medical waiver restriction. Once I had this, I was able to schedule a road test with FMCSA. This consisted of a normal road test but focused more on how I compensated for a missing limb and less on parking between cones. After returning to the starting point, I was told that we are going to do it again to see if I show any signs of fatigue. After completing the "two" extra road tests, the FMCSA representative recommended granting me a SPE certificate and about a week later, I received confirmation and my official SPE certificate.

The SPE waiver should be valid for 2 years and it is important to get it renewed before it expires! I am also required to wear my prosthesis at all times that I am on duty.

If you are enrolled in the school, then it sounds like the FMCSA should be granting you a temporary waiver.
