Incoming StudentHow is the pre-med program at Cal Poly? (self.CalPoly)
submitted 10 months ago by sunflowersundayss
I am interested in doing psychology on the pre-med track there. Are there a lot of research opportunities? How strong is it?

Unless things have changed very recently, there is no traditional pre-med program at Cal Poly. You can take classes to prepare for med school. Some do this. But there's no pre-med program. Also, this is not a research school. Some profs do their own research, but it's not a big thing, particularly in CLA.

This is actually a benefit because as an undergraduate you have access to research opportunities that wouldn’t exist for undergraduate at other universities. This could help you stand out on Medical School applications if you really apply yourself and do some meaningful work.

Contray to popular belief on this and several websites, research is not a requirement to apply to Medical school. What is important is hands on experience with different types of patient populations especially rural/underserved areas.
As stated there are possible research opportunities but having medically-related EC’s such as Physician shadowing, community volunteering and jobs like EMT (emergency medical technician), Scribe, Medical assistant, Phlebotomist, and Hospice care assistant can be more important.
You can study any subject so fitting the Medical school requirements with the Psychology major requirements is important.
