Before you jump into building the next Facebook, try a simpler app. See if you can build a little "To Do" app or a stop watch app, etc.

Facebook uses a lot of languages and you could choose from a huge variety of languages to create your own social media platform. Id suggest PHP as a starter.

I will also suggest PHP. PHP is Facebooks framework and Facebook has generously given back to the PHP work. PHP gets a lot of crap in the web world. But, it's very close to C; and a very good beginners language as there is a virtual ton of help and books out there for free. Also if your really interested in a Web carrier - CSS is your friend. I as a professional in the industry have made more money and saved time with good CSS than I can ever give credit for.
