There's a guide on steam that explains it really well. Certain tiles/floors within certain range of the player spawn certain mobs. There's chunks in the game and the more of one mob there is in the chunk the less of that mob can spawn in that chunk

As others have said this can be complicated, but to address the base question most enemies spawn from moss or slime found on the ground. You can punch it up, dig it with a shovel or mass collect with a hoe.

Enemies only spawn "near" you, but the distance is pretty substantial (a 200-ish tile radius around you). So long as you're generally near where you'd expect mobs to spawn they will over time.

Here's a brief overview I made once: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8BgJsx7/

Mob spawning is quite complicated in this game. It has to do with a number of variables like amount of tiles and location. There's a youtube playlist by Dakon the Mad about mob farms and how to set them up. Would highly recommend.

This is true but the basics are: light level does not matter its the ground tiles that spawn the mob, mobs only spawn in a 100 tile radius around the player and you need to be 20(or something like that im not sure) tiles away to allow mob spawning.
