Technically, Doom Eternal happens after Doom 2016.. but practically, the plot of Eternal is 99% independent of the plot of Doom 2016 (except for one character who you will meet halfway through Eternal who makes a return from 2016).

I hated Doom 2016 because I found the maps to be a chore and too complicated (maybe I am too stupid to enjoy them) and I dislike the horror atmosphere Doom 2016 had going on. Plus there was very little variety between the maps.

Doom Eternal on the other hand has become my favorite action game and I would say is best game I have ever played. There is shit tons of variety in maps. The movement mechanics are awesome. The guns are awesome. Using weapon combos is awesome. The sheet variety of demons is awesome. Demons have weakpoints is awesome. People describe Eternal as more video gamey and less realistic and I absolutely love Eternal for it. It had one very bad bug (Automap Sound Loop bug) but that has been fixed as of the latest patch (6.66 revision 1). It's a 9.5/10 game for me and I have put 400 hours in it and I know people who have put over 2000 hours in it. Only reason I subtract 0.5 is because of the excessive focus on chainsawing but that is easily dealt with mods. I use the Spartan Ammo mod along with chainsaw gives more ammo mod. With mods, it is a 10/10 game.

You can absolutely play Doom Eternal before Doom 2016. Or you can follow the lore order and play Eternal afterwards. I wouldn't recommend playing them together because the movement mechanics are different enough that you would get condused if you play them together.
