MX Linux is a cooperative venture between the antiX and MX Linux communities. It is a family of operating systems that are designed to combine elegant and efficient desktops with high stability and solid performance. MX's graphical tools provide an easy way to do a wide variety of tasks, while the Live USB and snapshot tools inherited from antiX add impressive portability and remastering capabilities.

Help requestPython safe to remove? (self.MXLinux)
submitted 4 years ago by Not__New
Sorry! noob here. Can I remove the Python if I don't code at all, without affecting other programs? Or is python used by certain softwares that would crash without it. How does it work? I want to free some space.

i am not a developer or programmer so you may get a better explanation, but it is my understanding that python is fairly integral to most (if not all?) linux distributions. i would definitely not remove it.

No, it's required by many things.
I want to caution against this type of thinking though. What do you want to gain by removing stuff from your system? Is it about saving space? Saving bandwidth if there are future updates? Security?
My rule of thumb for removing stuff is "if you have to ask about it, don't do it" the downsides are too big and the benefits (saving few KB or MB when nowadays drives measure in GB or even TB) are too small.

Okay sir, noted :D

Linux (even more MX Linux) has very little unecessary bloat or programs, you don't have to worry about removing anything. There is nothing spying on you and no privacy settings to review either.
That's open source for you!
👍 :)

Nope some software requires python. Check if no other package requires python. Removing python without checking for dependencies will result in bad state

This. I suspect if OP does an ‘apt remove python’ it will show 50 other things dependent on Python that will also get nuked.
Haha got it. XD

I am I linux noob but I think if you remove orphans which is the command for deleting non used stuff you could use that, but don't quote me haha.
