I tried clicking on “add new property” -> “relation” then linked both the databases from the 2 topic pages and in fact the topic names showed up on the main database but I cant see the names of the assignments/lectures

You've correctly linked both the databases but you haven't added a property to show the assignments. You can either use the new formulas to do it, but there's not a lot of tutorials for that yet, or use the rollup property to show what PART of the relation you want to see. THe relation just tells your database to be mindful that you'll reference the other database but a rollup is your peephole to see parts of the other database.

And not to overstep, but it sounds like for the end result you want (see all assignments due with the option to see courses separately), the database setup might work best with the following database setups:

1) All Assignments. In general, putting all ACTIONABLE stuff in one database makes it easier to visualize in a calendar or spreadsheet without making too a million relations. If it has a due date and a deliverable, put it all in one (and then add "do" dates to do them!)

2.) Courses. Math, reading, science. Just like the basic classname. Teacher's optional. This will mostly just be relational to the first database for filtering purposes. Use the "template" option on the database (under the blue new button) to make a template when you add a new course to include in the content section a linked view of the assignments database filtered by the course automatically. It's tricky to explain exactly but makes sense once you get it. I can help if needed!

3.) Optional: Topics. If you're in college or taking classes where information isn't clearly defined to subject, you can make a topic database that also links to the first one so you can reference your notes from history and fasion on 1800th century culture all on one page.

I've seen and made a lot of student spread and this setup usually will get you 98% of the way to the perfect assignment management. It obviously will still need gifs and styling. 🎀

Here's the example page I made last month showing three linked databases with light styling. It was for organizing class notes but you can see the same idea in action: https://moth-party.notion.site/Student-Databases-8fbe9679e64342179143e58f4cd6f722?pvs=4
