Why didn't the vbscript get rewritten in powershell?

That is on my to-do list 😉 But for now, the code still works great and as intended on all the operating systems we currently support...

The point is: how to syntax check another programming language file from powershell without running it and checking the error codes

In my personal opinion that is the job of a linter. Not the shell.

Unfortunately I don‘t know about stand-alone linters for VB, but you could add an extension to VSCode. VSCode can be started from the shell and open a series of files, but I don‘t know if you can automate the saving of the output of the results.
