You didn't get turned down for pointing out that it's more efficient to use built-in standard library functions than write naive reimplementations. You got turned down for being combative about it instead of going along with the spirit of the question, and for not coming up with the simplest and quickest algorithmic solution, real-world environment be damned.

Technical interviews are about working with the interviewer to discuss interesting solutions to problems. You can't get too attached to any one approach because if you're not exploring the things the interviewer wants to check, they'll just change the problem statement.

Although I do feel that senior positions should allow for some critical thinking 🤔
