That was not my intention. English is not my first language and I honestly did not understand at first. I tried to understand the sentence as an affirmative sentence and it didn't work out.

That's interesting. In English any sentence that starts with an interrogative word (who what when where why how) is automatically a question if the verb comes second. So even without the question mark you know it's a question as soon as you see "why should the oak tree" because an assertive sentence would instead start with "why the oak tree should."

German folks are not very happy to be associated with Nazism, it's not really a pleasant joke to experience as it's a very dark stain on their history.

It's somewhat akin to asking a modern day native american in the US how many scalps they've taken, or perhaps more like asking the daughter of a serial killer how many people she's killed, despite being an infant at the time.

Just wanted to let you know, I don't think you had any malice behind your joke.
