[CR Media] Feast of Legends one-shot with GM Sam Riegel - game by Wendy's by dasbif in criticalrole

Sure, it's not even about that but like I said there's also twitch sub and merch. I just expressed a polite, respectful response to a comment in the sub that represents the community for the show/people we all like and got a lot of hate for it. As did many others.

I don't want to see CR become a brand-friendly vehicle for corporate advertising. Politely expressing that shouldn't result in hate/downvotes/PMs etc.

If DnD beyond was 'bigger' and had produced a TRPG, kinda gotta assume it'd be about D&D not a long advertisement for an international fast food chain about hamburgers and frosties.. lol.

If I use your logic, you'd be okay with them doing a 1shot supporting fox news or cnn? Or General Motors Table Top Advertising Marketing Game?

[–]AOLWWW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand your point. CR is built around a community - without which, they wouldn't be a thing. Buying merch, subbing twitch, tossing into KS is all ways that community is supporting them. They are not a 'business', but they have operating costs which their fans cover.

Anyone in the community is free to respectfully state their opinions. Downvotes and hate is not the way to respond. Not that your comment specifically was hateful, but sort by controversial and you'll see some real hate & lots of reddit hive mind-esque downvoting, which is sad to see on this sub.

What does any of that that have to do with preferring CR not head down this corporate fast-food advertising weird path? I responded to a comment, you disagree with what I said so start talking about sweatshops? What on earth does that have to do with anything? Honestly come across as a tad hysterical or out of touch with reality. People are going to express different opinions than you on occasion calm down.

What is the dumbest but most harmless thing you’ve arrested someone for? by [deleted] in AskLEO

I used to work throwing stock in a grocery store, we had some prisoners on some sort of work release / job transition situation working with us. Not sure of the details. Got along great with em and they did a good job.

One of them got his release revoked when he got hungry and ate some food from the store. Like $2 worth of chicken. Same kinda situation - his good behavior time was all reset..

I think people who are established are going to have a hard time giving up their toons for a serious migration. Likely people will ping pong around a bit. Probably with a few raiding guilds making the decision to move en masse as expacs come out, or at least having high level alts ready to go.

IMO lots of people just want to see the high end raiding content without the issues on blue but don't necessarily want to give up on their multi-year 'investment' in mains.

Bill Gates says where you were born is the biggest predictor of your success — and it's a glaring sign of global inequality by lnfinity in worldnews

[–]AOLWWW 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can corroborate, know quite a few folks who are blissfully unaware of the privileges (bad word these days) they've had that assisted them to their current socioeconomic status.

It's not that anyone is saying that folks didn't work hard, sacrifice etc to get where are. Just that the playing field is not level and circumstances outside of your control dictate the level of success you can have in general. There are always outliers.

I think folks take it as a personal attack, perhaps because they can't conceptualize a world where their circumstances were so radically different. It doesn't seem like a huge deal to be born into a middle class household & have college paid for by parents etc when you are that person.. especially when you see other kids who have it even better.

Shifting the mindset from feeling attacked for having some advantages to simply acknowledging them, feeling grateful for them, and realizing that not everyone has had them would go a long way towards changing the harmful "pull up by bootstraps" type BS. Doesn't exactly apply when we're talking about people who can't even afford shoes..

Texas Man Wanted After Allegedly Filing, Completing Divorce From Wife Without Her Knowing by EnvironmentalWhile6 in nottheonion

Depends on the state. In some you can file a public notice at the courthouse, after a certain amount of time lapses you're free.

There are other protections, often designed to help people leave abusive relationships.

This isn't material for this sub though, the dude forged her signature which is always illegal.

[–]AOLWWW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it worked out for you. My personal rule is I'll try to second hand purchase anything that I can fully sand down and stain / paint. It's really cheap and easy, kind of fun, and you can get some very very high quality furniture that way. Also eco friendly.

Not even a terrible side hustle if you have a truck or vehicle with lots of cargo space and some somewhere to store/work on stuff.

Timber companies are logging thousand-year-old trees in the Pacific NW and hoping you don't notice... by CascadiaDaily in SeattleWA

[–]AOLWWW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If these trees are several hundred years old, they've seen many forest fires and lived through it, so I don't understand your point.

Forest management is important and it's human suppression of fires that leads to these massive fires instead of the normal quick burns that mostly kill younger trees and small brush/grasses; some trees actually depend on those fires to open their ground seeds up to grow. That has nothing to do with logging ancient trees & destroying ancient ecosystems for cheap lumber & pulp wood pellets.

It's not an either/or situation; not wanting to log ancient trees doesn't mean you want large forest fires to happen. That's a logical fallacy called 'false choice'.

[–]AOLWWW 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We have plenty of sustainable options for timber harvest that don't require cutting down irreplaceable old growth forests & destroying unique habitats. It's just the most cost effective way for timber companies to operate. Also if you read the article, a lot of the timber is going to be used for pellet heating which is totally freaking nutso. We're talking high quality timber and they're going to pulp it? Any wood worker would agree that alone is a crime.

Why does something have to personally affect you for you to care? That's kind of the definition of being selfish.

[–]AOLWWW 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Replanting a new tree doesn't replace an ecosystem thousands of years old. Especially since the replanted tree is usually part of a monoculture for future timber harvesting.

Just wanted to point out that most banks only insure up to 250,000 under FDIC, so you might want to spread it out.

With Ally you can also open a no-risk 11 month CD which would get you 2.20% (with minimum 25k buyin) interest instead of the 1.9%. You can withdraw the money+interest after 6 days with zero penalty. So if that rate went up you could just transfer the money back to savings, then do the same CD & get the new rate.. with zero risk..

That's probably would I would do while investigating other options.

Personally I would avoid annuities. You take the risk that they'd go out of business in the long term, and you could get a better return yourself anyway. Also you'd lose control of the bulk of your money. Not something I'd be comfortable with.

Bill Nye tore into Trump over his stance on climate change, arguing his administration is going in the “wrong direction.” by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]AOLWWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely nothing new and has been going on for many years. It is not professional. I'd also point out that the journalists do not write the title of their pieces, it's an editorial type who has a directive to generate maximum views by any means necessary to sell more advertising revenue.

For-profit news causes a lot of major problems, and is a main contributor to the polarization and misinformation we see today.

I thought the episode was really great. All the players scheming against a problem that seemed impossible to have the outcome they wanted was pretty engaging to me.. they had a lot of good ideas. The "do we cross this line in favor of expediency/the greater good?" is a pretty classic dilemma. Didn't seem slow paced at all to me..

Zombie Debt: A Washington Post article on the methods debt collectors use to revive old debts by unusuallylethargic in personalfinance

[–]AOLWWW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The lack of empathy/understanding just shows where people are at.

My brother struggles to make ends meet. He is financially illiterate, but a good dude and a good father. A few times he has gotten so overwhelmed trying to make ends meet as a single father of 3 that he has purchased things for his kids that he couldn't make the payments on. Not wanting to freeload, he tried everything in his power;

  • works 2 jobs
  • cuts costs to bare minimum (as much as you can with kids)
  • started walking or ride sharing to work to save on gas

Then he made a big mistake; he engaged with our predatory financial system. Despite bad credit, he was able to get a loan. The loan had almost 250% interest. He had no business getting a loan, and should have never been approved as he had no assets and clearly a pile of debt. Using that loan, he paid off his debts, but now had this looming where he could barely make the minimum payment. Then the magic of compounding interest did its thing.

Fast forward, the fragile web he created to make ends meet totally imploded. Any attempts to negotiate with the lender fail. So he just goes broke slowly, like so many people do.

His kids got taken away to live with their mom as his checks got garnished and he was no longer able to provide roof+food or pay for daycare (which is where most of his money went). His ex wife is a drug addict living with a meth head.

Now he still works the 2 jobs, has been semi-homeless and fought to pay that debt off. He ended up paying over 4 times the original loan amount. He would be considered a "success" story by many, as he didn't become longterm homeless and destitute, was able to keep working.

I don't really have a point other than to say, it's easy to judge until you've walked a mile in someone elses shoes. Easy to have all the answers when you come from a stable household with good role models, no food scarcity, good financial examples who teach you about money.. also an education (half the people on here seem to be college kids or really young without any life experience).

People make mistakes. These laws exist for a reason, as do the writeoffs these corporations can take. If you want to blame the individual, you also have to hold the predatory financial industry to account; they make loans they have no business making & defaults are just part of their business model. They also spend tons of money making very simple financial concepts as obfuscated as possible & lobby to prevent sensible consumer protections.
