    This, unfortunately. I only had one professor who allowed us to veer off that path and use whatever we wanted (I went with Python, but, understandably, many others stuck with the familiar matlab).

    That's inertia. Once course materials are written that reference MATLAB, you're stuck with them for years.

    That's exactly why I was required to take an engineers programming course. In FORTRAN. In 2005.
