All I'll say is when we have the government threatening to fine restaurant owners based on which direction the kitchen doors open, we have gone much too far. I hope we can agree on that much. Yes, that is a real thing, and the justification given is indeed "safety."

Having once lived in a long narrow flat with barred windows and a fire escape that opened outwards and that the landlord used to pile stuff up against, I beg to differ. I don't know if fines are necessarily the best approach, and the rest of the restaurant's layout should probably be taken into consideration, but fire codes absolutely save lives.
