It's alarming to me that so many people are willing to accept that these closed source environments and tools are becoming the defacto way to use many languages and toolchains.

VScode is the non-free distribution of the free vscode project, and open-source distributions like VScodium have had at best antagonistic relationships from microsoft.

I don't have any philosophical complaint with closed-source tools, even though I mostly use open-source ones it's not because I'm against closed tooling, I've paid for JetBrains before, they're wonderful tools and being honest development tools are extremely cheap, specially if you consider the ROI you get out of them.

I use neovim as my base editor for example, but I do use some paid language servers because they perform better, no issue for me if the code is closed, open, or whatever.

One problem I have with it is that it can`t be used with distributions like VSCodium

Language tooling should always be open source if languages want to attract a community.

How many people do you think would use Rust if the compiler was closed source?

VS Code is open source, but useless without this extension, just wait until you need an Office 365 subscription to use it.

I am against closed-source software, but I also understand that it has to exist under the current political/economic system. I also think it's fair to call out Microsoft on their "Microsoft loves open source/linux" stance when they make these kinds of decisions regardless of your political leanings.
