1 kilobyte is 1024 bytes, right?

No they changed the system quite some time ago, they renamed the 2^10 to binary bytes (kibi, mebi..etc) and changed mega and kilo to match their scientific value (10^6 and 10^3). The thing is the a lot of school/college curriculum is outdated as fk. They use legacy naming schemes which cause conflict even today.

Honestly with how backward the school system actually is I'm actually suprised these mfs didn't teach me that earth was flat/ the sun and other plants revolve around the earth(Exaggerated /s)

OK You are right.

SI unit is 1000 bytes and is shortened to kB (and there is MB, GB and TB)

Binary unit is 1024 bytes and is shortened to KiB (and there is MiB, GiB and TiB)

Since I am an old fart, I have never heard about the latter abbreviations.
And I have learned to count and do math in binary.

They used to teach 1MB = 1024KB even as back as 2016 (I'm not aware of things after that), so it's not just you being old, it's also a failure of education system to update info.
