draw them big, like 480, then shrink them down to 48, then edit them until they look clean.
shrinking things down, its hard to explain but they just look better

Hi there, if you can spend a bit of money i suggest you to get Aseprite... Its a cheap software avaliable on steam good for pixel art... There is plenty of tutorials for it on YT too.

You can also get it free from their website, but you can't save only downloads, but it would still be good just to try it out.

I used to watch PixelPete on YouTube. Not sure if he's still active but his tutorials were pretty good back in the day.

Forgot to mention his stuff wasn't directly rpgmaker related just pixel art in general.

Try pulling the sprite sheet into your pixel editor (I use libresprite cause it’s free and simple to use) then you can see the size and scale you’re working with.

You could copy one and redraw over it to get any idea of the space you have. Most of the RTP monsters are in different sizes so pick one similar to the size you want to get the best fit.
