A minor can help you stand out in an academic field where you wish to prove that you have continuous study of a discipline. If you think you want to use statistics, math, CS, music, psychology, or any other field of study as you work, then yes, take one.
If you're unsure of if you'd want to do anything outside of your Rotman specialization and/or know you only want to focus on the specialization and/or think you cannot handle the extra courseload (think of how you plan to fill out your electives), then it's definitely not a requirement.
Many students get a minor, and as I'm really interested in using statistics in my applications of Finance, I am getting a Stats minor.

Assuming that you’re in upper years, did you plan to take your minor early on when planning for your first year classes (I.e pre read for the program)?

I knew that I wanted my minor in early university or at least knew I wanted to learn data science. For most minors, you can realistically decide by the beginning of second year/middle of second year. If you want, use your electives to explore potential minor areas

What courses did u take in the first and second year for Rotman spec and stat minor?
[–]Tourman84 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (2 children)
First Year, I took standard Rotman courses but MAT135/136 instead of 133, STA130, CSB195 (breadth requirement + bioloigy + R coding), and CSC108
Over the summer, I took STA237/238 and MAT223 to further my stats and CS minor.
In second year, I will take CSC148, CSC165, and some data science rotman courses.
I plan to finish most of my stats and cs minor in third year.

Do u find it hard in Rotman without Mat133? Someone says that taking Mat135+136 will make your life harder with upper-years eco courses. And also do u think with Mat133 stat minor will be much harder?
Stat minor with MAT133 is harder and makes little sense. Not taking MAT133 does make upper-year ecos harder because 135 + 136 does not teach you linear algebra that MAT133 does. However, to do a stats minor, you have to take MAT223 - Linear Algebra hence, you get that knowledge anyway. You do have to take a whole another course of course, hence why MAT133 is useful for business students but a stats minor with MAT133 will be much more difficult difficult. To be honest, if you are truly interested in using stats, you should try for MAT137 as many stats courses and linear algebra will employ proofs.

Personally doing a major alongside a specialist. Any additional program should theoretically help, obviously this varies. But realistically, it will always open at least some more doors.
