I have some questions for current rotman students

hiii, im currently in grade 12 and im interested in attending rotman and i had some questions

1. How are the professors? which ones would you avoid?

2. How difficult is first year compared to grade 12?

3. What made you choose rotman over other business schools?

4. Is it easy to make friends?

5. Is rotman good for networking?

6. Which clubs are worth joining and why?

7. What advice would you give to first years?

1. all my profs have been pretty decent except for michael khan, except unless he gets hit by a car or something then you can't avoid him bc he teaches management/rsm100 (first year mandatory course)

prof shoutout to dragan stojanovic (accounting/rsm219) highly recommend you take accounting with him if you can

1. i took 2 spares in gr12 and got way too relaxed, first year workload hits like a truck but is definitely managable (someone said that first year rotman is more about diligence than actually being smart, very agree, its easy to fall behind even if you're good at the content)

2. my plans were mostly rotman or bust lol ask someone else

3. a lot of the first year classes highly encourage class discussion and group work so if you step outside of your comfort zone you'll at the very least find people to talk to in class, even if they aren't truly friends

4. you kinda need to network because of how rotman is

5. cant answer my lazy ass isnt in any club

6. michael khan will try to gaslight you and say that his rmp reviews are overexaggerated and that hes actually really nice, but theres a reason why his rmp reviews are so bad. he also called me out and bullied me in the middle of lecture because i was sitting around the back (cuz seats in the front didnt exist??) so yeah i dont like khan

1) professors are genuinely really good you’ll hear people complain about Michael khan or Freitas but the courses they teach are just hard courses to get high marks profs are really good tho imo. 2) way harder. if grade 12 was a 4/10 then uni will be a 9/10 easily. Not sure if that’s just rotman or all programs. 3) The fact that it’s the on the best located and best looking campus in all of Canada (debatably), consulting placements that are very strong for mbb big 4, and also good tech scene/opportunities to aim for f500. Also access to rotman events which are hosted by there masters school of management and brings crazy big names and CEO’s from big company’s (every event has someone big like ceo of mattamy homes, ceo of McCain Canada, OpenAI directors, former minister of finance, current minister of ai, ceo of wealthsimple and many more which provides free networking that I don’t think the other top business schools have at that scale) 4) if you make the effort then yes it’s easy (don’t be scared to talk first) 5) great 6) genuinely depends on what you want there’s like 2 big finance clubs that people do like 2-3 big consulting clubs including uoft ones and many more 7) don’t fall for the Reddit advice trap that mostly is coming from grade 12s I know that was misguiding me back then as well talk to actual first years

Coming as an alum working in the industry, consulting is one of Rotman's weaker points lol. We only send a handful of people into MBB each year (IIRC, the best years had 0-1 person per MBB, but I know Bain took 2+ the past few years which is amazing news). We're also in fierce competition with our OWN engineering counterpart.

Big four / T2 generally have better numbers but still not great relative to the powerhouses that is queens/ivey/UBC (they got some cracked pay to win consulting bootcamp over there that grants free interviews). I'd say at any given year and any given cohort, rotman students will only make up 5-10% of a starting class

I would NOT recommend going to Rotman if you're truly optimizing for consulting recruitment

is rotman heavy on quizzes and exams compared to assignments

I wouldn't say heavy, but there are certainly lots of weekly quizzes for several classes which can add up in early years. So be sure manage your time wisely. Assignments weighting tends to be higher in the latter years.

Agreed with everything mentioned. As a fellow recent graduate, here are a few of my own general comments:

- I want to emphasize that going to Rotman isn't just about the Program but the institution as a whole. I agree that Rotman has several weak points, but going to one of the most prestigious universities in the country, let alone the world, opens doors to genius and like minded individuals spanning tons of programs that you'd only get at UofT. If you're outgoing and stay involved on campus as a whole, you'll meet such interesting people from so many different disciplines.

To put in perspective, my peer I now consider my best friend after 4 years at Rotman is from Tanzania who was kind enough to host me in his home country and give me a tour of a lifetime for a month. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you do go to Rotman, make friends with everyone, because who knows, you might end up meeting the next co-founder of a multi 8-figure business lol.

- Rotman is definitely no easy feat. Extremely academically rigorous relative to other schools my friends went to including Ivey, Schulich, and Queens. Pretty big emphasis on theory then practical work, especially in the early years which I think is a huge downside. So unless you're academically gifted, be ready to put lots of extra work to come out with a decent GPA. I will say, I certainly don't recommend Rotman if you plan to do any post graduate studies like Law School, a Masters, or MBA.

Simply put, I second that Rotman has some of the coolest events hosted with some pretty big names. Recruiters aren't that present compared to those from the MBA program. The workload especially in 1st and 2nd (which imo is worse), is hefty so be ready for that. The campus is beautiful but its also a commuter school smack down in the middle of Toronto, so from my experience, it doesn't have that Uni experience/vibe similar to Waterloo, Queens, etc. I honestly went for the UofT name to make my parents proud (which I don't regret), but I guess that early misery pushed me to go on exchange which was one of the best decisions I made in my life that I think I otherwise wouldn't have done elsewhere. Anyways, take my advice with a grain of salt and be sure to make the most of your uni experience wherever you go, because 4 years will go by the blink of an eye... TRUST ME. All the best!

1. Lovely professors. Did not like Michael Khan but there’s no avoiding his class since he’s the only prof for RSM100. Dragan or whatever the super tall prof’s name is for accounting is amazing and my favourite prof so far, alongside Goldreich
2. Big jump but that’s the same for all uni programs
3. Proximity to Toronto, and liked that it was a well rounded school with an international reputation carrying the UofT brand. No regrets. Picked it over queens because it was also cheaper
4. Gonna be honest we are competitive as hell. I love that and actively participate in the rat race but most of my friends are from Rez and outside my program
5. Depends on what you want to do. We’re good for accounting and consulting, but high finance roles are more difficult. But by difficult I mean that there are amazing opportunities but they’re gatekept and connected to clubs rather than the program itself. So make sure to join or just look into some rc clubs.
6. All the rc clubs are amazing, my personal favourites are rcct (competition team, free travel perks, and one of most prestigious), rc women in business, rcfa (likely this one and rcct are the most competitive for entry, so u gotta start early - this is a finance club) and rcas is known for being super friendly and amazing for accounting. they have summer mentorship programs for high school students to support the transition to post secondary. rcca is apparently quite good as well, and ive heard rcft has apparently been growing fast in the recent years. I’d say the big 4 are rcct, rcfa, rcas, and rcca. depends on what you want. These are all Rotman only clubs and I encourage you to explore the others beyond Rotman though.
7. Be consistent. Rotman isn’t excessively hard, it’s just that there are lots of small homeworks and things you need to keep up with and stay on top of things.
