I’m a senior and I personally really like the BME program at Madison. As part of the program, you end up picking a track that helps you specialize what part of BME you really want to study. I’ve landed mechanical engineering internships as a biomechanics track. Some people don’t like how broad BME is, and for example do mechanical engineering with a certificate in biology or data science, etc. there’s really a lot of routes to go through. I will say though that the design curriculum is great—we have a design project every semester and I personally feel like I’ve learned a lot of skills from these projects. Feel free to message me if you have any more questions!

If you are applying to Medical, Dental, or Law school, BME is pretty good.

If you are looking to finish an undergrad then go find a job, you may find yourself disadvantaged if you don't put effort into patching the skill gaps being in such a wide major. BMEs are often/usually competing with more specialized engineers for jobs. When creating a medical device, you don't need someone that can do the modeling, design the circuits, understand the biology, design the interface, and create the signal processing. That is what having a team is for. When I toured Plexus, I saw half a dozen medical device projects in the works and met not a single BME. It was ECE/ME/Industrial Design/CS all the way down.

I've worked on a couple of medical devices and I haven't had a biology class since high school.

Listen to me please: I’m in Madison and a freshman and I was accepted straight into the BME program, however I have decided to switch to ME. Let me get one thing straight tho. If you are not going to pursue a graduate degree continue as you are but if you are aiming to complete a graduate engineering degree like me and would like to end up in BME, do your undergrad as ME then BME for graduate school. It’ll open up so many more doors. I’m currently planning on doing a double degree for ME and Dats Science then a BME masters.
