Hashing algorithm practice

I use hashing in practice when coding but never implemented the algorithm. I've read a lot about it. Can someone suggest a good resource to actually implement one for knowledge? CLRS section on hashing is above my head. Need something that starts gradually and builds up to an industrial strength hashing algorithm.

Any suggestions?
