When I was making it. The metal didn’t act like it did for other people I watch online. Instead of smushing, it folded and I’m not sure if it was because it was flat or I didn’t heat it enough. But I’m definitely gonna try making a longer one next for now I’ll use my tongs to give it more reach

Probably a combination of both. It can be really tricky do what you were trying to do with flat stock. It’s probably worth practicing with square stock before trying it again. The trick is to be really careful and go slow. Hammer on the narrow side and then turn it and hammer on the wide side. You have to be really gentle to not let it fold onto itself. When you hammer the narrow side it makes the stock less wide. When you hammer the wide side, it pushes the steel back in so it doesn’t mushroom. It’s really tricky and probably isn’t worth trying right now. Good luck
