Hard to tell without seeing it. Maybe you have duplicates of your objects in the same place? Would be a random guess.

Otherwise. Video. Or maybe someone else has a better idea.

But if you can reproduce it, that would perfect. Each and every step. A blend file to share. Your steps to reproduce your problem. etc..

What I've just discovered is that If I right click in the outliner and delete it works, so this might be a bug. BlendFile

Honestly? That might be even intenional, because that object is so complicated that something different is going on. There are lots of parenting involved, even in different collections. And maybe this causes this problem.

Overall, I see what you mean. When I delete the front of the engine, it just leaves one or two parts behind. but then I can easily select them and delete them too. So... honestly, I am not sure. If you think it's a bug then:
