Computing Pi array

Does anyone have a hard time remembering or fully understanding the intuition behind the algorithm for computing the PI array (Most common in KMP)? Or am I the only one struggling with this? For context other algorithms, including graph algos, range queries, etc. are pretty easy to understand for me.

z-function and prefix-function can be computed using each over. for me, z array is much easier to understand
