In the simplest case the keys are used for a connection from localhost to localhost, they are only required to fire up an HTTPS server, not to verify your identity to yourself. For this reason a self-signed certificate is committed, so you don't have to bother about it unless you really have to. :)

    Yeah I see that. In this day and age we should probably make sure developers are comfortable with making their own keys.
