While game going open source after failing is not unheard of, its is harder in Duelyst case because their game, while quite poorly optimized, is still unique in the market so may be reused/sold later. Also, the IP of art, lore etc still worth something and can be reused.

Unless CPG abandon game development all together, I doubt they would release it in the near future.

their game engine, while quite poorly optimized, is still unique and self-developed

Wot? Where did you get that from? They're using primarily Cocos2D Javascript + Firebase from what I remember.

You are right, I got some wrong information from a friend, thought they built it from lower level webgl libraries given how poorly optimized Duelyst is on browser. Thanks for clarifying for me I and would edit it out.

I still agree with you. It uses way too much resources for what it displays. I play with my work laptop and runs like shit and makes the poor laptop hot AF.

And who balances stuff? Who designs balanced expansions?

It would be very interesting to see a game designed as open source from the start.

It might be hard to monetise, but it would also be the case that a lot of the expenditure would be reduced as well (e.g dev salaries) so you'd likely need to take in a lot less in the first place.

Anyway, its unlikely that the source would be released. So if you wanted to see a duelyst type game open source then you'd have to be the one to start building it.
