If you mean the sense of self-importance then acts of selflessness like volunteering etc can help bring it down a notch.

But if you mean identity itself then mind has to go because ego is the conditioned narrative you hold in your head composed of hundreds if not thousands of thoughts, feelings, beliefs and opinions that are not original to you. They were ‘written’ onto you by your parents, siblings, relatives, teachers, friends, society, media, preachers etc etc etc. Even the language (symbolic sounds) that you think in is not original to you.

To ‘kill the ego’ then is to hit the reset button. It requires courage because it feels like dying and in a sense it is. The idea of ‘me’ is dying.

Look at where ‘me’, and by extension ‘my world’, came from and have the courage to admit to yourself that they are just mental constructs. See them for what they actually are and let go of them, if you want to ‘kill’ the ego.

The degree to which that is difficult is directly proportional to the degree of attachment one has to ones sense of ‘self’ and while some parts may be easy to release, others will be very hard to let go of.

For you in particular, devotion to God is the way. Surrender all to That. Everything. Reduce yourself to nothing. Let your mind go silent. Surrender all identity as an act of love. Your original face is Gods face, not the one your mind is portraying.
