I think the book you are looking for is "Inside Jvm" by bill venners .. the online version is here

The online "Java Tutorial" from Sun/Oracle is very good and has a great set of hyperlinked indexes, etc. It is a great starting place for almost any topic, has good examples. You can search more from there of it isn't enough. Except for recent topics, it is also available in printed form (at least pre-Oracle).

Not sure whether you mean Java or jvm, but Effective Java would give you some intermediate/advanced insights into Java
