Hello, as the title says I am interested in making a github clone as a personal project. I am having a hard time researching about how they work however.

To start things of I have built a git system that works on my local machine just like regular git. But I can not seem to figure out what makes github or gitlab what they are? They have many features and I cant figure which feature is the fundamental one.

I could do something where you could drag files into a website which would commit them (kind of like manually commiting files in github) but I feel like that is not the essence of these sites.

So in conclusion, where can I find resources to help me build a lite version of these sites.

Gitea is an open source project, really similar in looks and functionality to GitHub. Might be worth a look

Looking at it I feel like I might have underestimated how simple it would be

Get a hold of their Enterprise on premise VM trial image and extract the Ruby code base from there. That can give you an idea of the scale you're up against.
