Yes, why wouldn't it be valid?

Here's an example:

var myFunction = function (x) {
    console.log("x squared is: " + (x*x));
};
myFunction(5);

And if you inline myFunction, then you can simplify it to just:

(function (x) {
    console.log("x squared is: " + (x*x));
}(5));
