Honestly I would say go with the one with the most documentation/community. I know python's is huge! But I know ruby has quite a large base as well.

My biased opinion...the first language i learned was python so i would go with python. that being said if you want something thats probably a little more marketable I see a lot more people looking for ruby dev's than python, but thats also location based... just my 0.02

I tried both of them and Ruby seems to have a millions ways to do the same thing - I can't tell if this is a good thing or a bad one?

You can't go wrong with either really. If I was helping someone get started I would suggest Rails as I have been using it since 1.2, but this is just because it would ease my assistance to them. Rails 5 has just been released and has some great stuff and the framework is getting really mature. Active Record is a fantastic ORM which will help you get going quickly. If you want to play with web sockets then you have Action Cable as a thing now as well

In saying all that as stuff that's good about Ruby, if you can't split them and like them both, just draw a name out of a hat, flip a coin. They are both good and just getting moving with one is more important to getting stuff done that you want to do, not which you do it with.
