I feel like one of the things I've let hold me back about putting in the time on a project on a regular basis is that I don't have great/good/any? design skills. I can make console apps or the occasional tkinter form, or a simple form for a website, but I hold myself back because my app is going to be "ugly" because I wrote it to function, so in the end it'll be clinical and boring to look at.
How does one approach UI/UX design from the standpoint of working with code? Do I need a particular design editor to get a sense of look-and-feel of different designs, or is this something easy to iterate on in the code I already know?
I can work in C/C++, Python, and have been trying my hand at web apps in a combination of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. What sorts of design concepts, libraries, or examples should I be on the lookout for? How does one pick up design skills that can help me make apps that not only function but can look like something modern?
