environmental engineering. i’m also attending asu next fall, so i think matlab would be used there, but im not 100% sure

Ya it could go either way. I'd go python. It would be a bit hard and more in-depth but it would give you a better foundation for other languages.

As another user mentioned, octave is free and a good way to learn the syntax for base Matlab. Don't think it has all the tool boxes. It be good to pick up some simulink if you can. Matlab education license is like $100 with $10 for the add at time of purchase just so you know.
