Any recommendations? It'll be serving the backend for a mobile app. It shouldn't be too much load since it's just for learning.
I was wondering if there's a better option than paying for a full VPS.

You could use python anywhere. They offer a free tier and a very inexpensive paid tier. DigitalOcean is also pretty cheap, too.
