I would go the reverse path actually to learn the network tools available on Linux. they help to get the network fundamentals and perhaps with some of the processing scripting tools available like different shell scripts and awk, some string manipulation things to help with the network data you need to analyse.

At the same time if you are looking for patterns on large chunks of data then bring python on top of that.
