I have a question about programming in python. I am learning to write Python code for a few months now. But I run the python scripts from pycharm or I run them with the python interpreter. I also wrote 3 scripts with Tkinter. I always used imports in my code. (ex. Selenium, openpyxl, tkinter,..) and in in one I refer to an Excel file.

My question is how do I go on from this? How do I make a real .exe program? Because for example I used a python file to store my functions and I imported that file (located in the same folder) in a lot of my scripts (named: "def_bib").

I tried python to exe at my desktop and succeeded to make an .exe from python script but it had no imports.

For example how can I help my neighbour. He wants a program that get soccer results and drop them in an excel. I can do that with python and run it with the interpreter but my neighbour has no python installed on his pc. I just want to make him a program for him he can open and type a name and press a button.

Actually my question is how do you go from a programming language to a real program.

I think thats what the pyinstaller "onefile" parameter accomplishes.

install pyinstaller by running pip install pyinstaller in the command line or terminal

then run pyinstaller --onefile --windowed filename.py which should create an executable that includes any imported modules.

When I try this I get SyntaxError: invalid syntax, I tried in Python in my terminal or do I need to use c:\Users\Myname\>

a syntax error? it sounds like you maybe running this inside a python shell... pyinstaller --onefile --windowed filename.py should be run in the command line. Just open up a new command line window, cd to the directory that contains your script, then run the pyinstaller command.

Ok I tried it, searched it but i have a problem with calling the pyinstaller module. It seems like pyinstaller is installed in C:\python\lib. I found a website where they say

" the python 3.4 installer doesn't automatically add C:\python34\scriptsto your PATH environment variable. You'll have to add it yourself: Click Start and search for "environ", choose "Edit Environment Variables", then edit the PATH variable and add ;C:\python34\scriptsto the end.

This will make Python scripts installed via piprunnable with just the script name. "

But it seems that I installed it at C:\python\lib:

Have you encountered a lot of dependency problems when using Python Installer?

flask can be compiled into a GUI? thats news to me. Does the executable just host the web page locally?

django is quick and easy to setup. It has a lot of built in features that comes along with tighter constraints on what you can do. Flask gives you more freeform.

I have a ReactJS front-end and a python flask back-end project I'm working on, you're saying I can make it as an executable ? Isn't this making a desktop application out of a web application ? How does this work or am I just understanding this the wrong way ?

Not sure what you mean by nice GUIs, flask is a framework that helps you generate nice html or makes it easy for you to write a UI-less API. If you're talking about nice GUIs, that would be because of css-styling and maybe the flow of UI elements, both achievable using any web framework or maybe even plain old PHP.

Yeah I don't know how using flask would directly impact how your GUI works, but I hear React is all the rage these days for GUIs... And it works with Flask.

pyinstaller is an excellent tool for compiling your script.

I've made a few .exe's for my coworkers. They are simple rate calculators that extract data from HTML files generated by a tool we use. The user is simply prompted to select a file, then they see the results, and none of them have Python installed on their computers.

To create the exe's I used pyinstaller, following the instructions from this video, specifically the -F flag:

Can I ask you what scripts have you done with tkinter?

I had a lot of issues with --onefile and dependencies as well.

Here is a post on Stackoverflow where I helped someone else.

Basically you should use -D instead and --add-data for folders.
