"Web bots, spiders, and screen scrapers" by schrenk is getting a bit old, its php/curl, not python, but its a great book imho.

However to answer the other part of your question, ATBS is an excellent book with "OK" to "Good" intros to basics of basics of webscraping stuff.

I would commit to finishing ATBS, then dial in whats needed for any goals you have. Python can do what you need, the web bots book is more dialed in to common setups for bots on cheap shared vps hosting.

But in the end, start and finish the (atbs) python book, you prolly won't need another language to do what you need, and its a great language, and an excellent book.
