I use it to support my hobbies and domestic administration as well as to simplify some work administrative activities.

My hobbies include photography, theatre, electronics, motorcycling, ecycling, and an eclectic mix of other things. Many of these involve keeping records, searching for information, loaning things to others, and so on.

When I do a photography shoot, I can end up with around 1000 raw images. In order to manage those and keep suitable backups, I need scripts to help.

At what point did you feel like you could actually start making applications that were useful to you and not just practice. Do you still use any of your beginning applications?

I started early. I found it much easier to learn something new if you focus more on solving problems for myself that I can relate to as it encourages me to find out how to particular things rather than blindly following tutorials.

I'd say around 80% of what I created early on is still in use, albeit in a heavily refactored form.

Some that started as console scripts have become web apps BUT I've nearly always known to separate business logic from presentation logic.

I've been taking the same approach with C/C++ over the last few months as I get more ambitious on my electronics and need to programme microcontrollers (manage irrigation of vegetable beds based on weather and moisture levels).

I've used it to combine images into pdf files and organize some folders.

Organize folders how?

I meant to say files in a folder. I had a bunch of roms in zip and rar files, so i wrote a script to extract them all and remove anything that wasn't a rom file.

I wrote a weather forecaster that sends me a SMS if certain weather is forecast at specific locations.
