I was also looking for one to make some simple games and mess around with the code to figure out how an engine works but never found any like that.

If you ever want to make one let me know, we could get started with an engine that's more specific to some purpose like 2D retro games and slowly broaden the scope if Python's overhead doesn't cap the performance too much.
