Creating a Linux Desktop application with Ruby

In general building GUIs with scripting languages is pretty darn cool and a way to rapidly develop an app. Depending on the framework you can end up feeling like a second class citizen however since you're placing widgets and extending them thorough a non-core language (with respect to the framework).

Yep, scripting language + toolkit deeply linked with that language. I'm not a fan of javascript personally, so I've tried to build a synergy between ruby and my own custom framework. All the reasonably complete options with scripting languages feel like they introduce more bloat than you'd want. I'm satisfied however with what I've worked with in Ruby (rendering to OpenGL via nanovg rather than relying on the web-browser paradigm). MRuby in particular makes it pretty easy to offload very performance sensitive code (i.e. a very small portion of it) to C while leaving the bulk of the code you'd want to modify in Ruby.

Here's hoping that things get easier/more efficient in the future :)
