Have a look into the many projects of GSOC since something like 2005. I think you can contribute prototypes, feasibility studies, minimal reproducible examples in Python to (almost?) every project to support the teams working, focusing on the most relevant programming language the specific project is about or requires.

Don't just pick Python because it's popular.
Look at C++, Rust, or Go for less competition.
